A Crack to the Outside
I scrambled out from under the desk and marched straight to the front door! There was a silver metal slit at the bottom, and cool, breezy air whistled right through it. A dried brown leaf fluttered past on the doormat outside. I pressed flat against the cool metal threshold and peered through the tiny gap. The hallway outside smelled like fresh rain and cold stone tiles. I wiggled my paper fingers toward the open world—I really want to step out there next!
