A Breeze Under the Gap
A tiny flutter of paper caught my eye right near the bottom gap of the front door. I hurried down from the boot with my penguin safely in my bag and crouched beside the wooden draft guard. It was a fallen leaf and an unfolded glossy takeout menu wedged against the brass sill! The draft from outside whistled softly underneath, catching the paper like a sail. With both hands, I folded the thick cardstock into a sturdy little wedge and tipped a stray dried acorn cap upside down into the corner to weigh it steady. Sitting there on the cool hardwood, we felt the cool outside breeze brush right over our cheeks.
