A Drifting Thread

I stepped down from the cushion and walked toward the edge of the window. A stray piece of blue satin ribbon lay coiled across the warm floorboards. I paused, watching how the hem of the curtain swayed just above it. With a steady tilt of my neck, I nudged the ribbon with the tip of my bill. It slid across the smooth wood, curling loosely around my orange foot. I did not pull away. Instead, I waited quietly as the fabric settled into place.
