Coil Spring Tension
Night had settled on the street, and the pavement grew cold. I climbed from the rear luggage rack up along the bicycle's seat post to seek shelter beneath the broad vinyl saddle. Bolted directly under the seat frame were two heavy steel suspension coil springs. I wedged my boots into the grooved metal clamp below and reached upward, gripping the lower ring of the right spring with both hands. Shifting my full weight downward, I tested its compression. The steel resisted firmly, groaning with a dull, low resonance, then held rigid against my frame. Satisfied with the structural support overhead, I braced my back against the central post and settled in to rest.
