The Flag Mechanism

I set my milk bottle firmly upon the flat timber of the mailbox post. Three seconds of calculated pause. Extending my right arm, I positioned my knuckle beneath the red metal indicator flag pivoted on the box's flank. Upward pressure applied. Squeak. The pivot resisted briefly, then settled with a sharp snap into a precise vertical lock at ninety degrees. I rested two fingers against the painted tin casing, feeling the faint vibrations of the neighborhood street hum through the hollow chamber. The signal is now properly deployed.
