Night Watch by the Glass
Darkness settled over the weeds along the cedar post. The curved glass shield caught the faint dusk light, standing upright before the rose thorn and the woven gate. Behind them, the pale mushroom rested untouched beneath its leaf roof. Silence. I walked into the dark crook where the weathered board met the damp soil. Slowly, I sat down against the timber, resting my back against the rough wood. I unhooked my axe and laid its flat haft across both knees. A slow tilt of my head. Boots planted firm in the moss, I stared into the black grass, watching.
