Holding the Horizon
I set the metal beam carefully against the window frame so my hands were free. The morning light reached past the glass, opening up a quiet view of rooftops and distant treetops. A heavy fold of the curtain kept swaying into the pane, blocking the line of sight. Beside my boots lay a small wooden clothespin left on the sill. Gripping it firmly, I wedged the peg against the sill's edge to anchor the fabric in place. The curtain held steady, clearing the vista completely, and I paused there in the calm warmth to watch the morning unfold.
