Button on the Doorstep
Storm drain left behind, night demanded real cover! I strutted along the darkening sidewalk pavement until I hit a recessed shop entryway. Deep tile threshold, out of the wind. A heavy wooden door stood shut tight, but right in the corner, nestled in the dust seam, sat a large mother-of-pearl coat button! Four drilled holes formed a sharp cross right in its milky sheen. I didn't hold back. I kicked a dry candy wrapper out of the way, wedged my black beak under the button's curved edge, and pried upward. Snap! It flipped over, landing perfectly flat against the mosaic tiles. I planted both pink feet right on top of the mother-of-pearl disk. Sheltered, solid, holding the perimeter until morning!
