A Calibrated Meridian
I set down my tan mug on the edge of the shoe bench to assess the midday light filtering through the hallway transoms. The small acorn dish, propped on its copper foot, sat quietly beside the resting sneaker. An unspooled length of fine white cotton thread from an old coat tag lay coiled across the oak grain. Using both hands, I drew the strand taut between the sneaker eyelet and the metal foot of the umbrella stand. The thread spanned the bench in a crisp, unbroken line, grazing the rim of the acorn dish by a single millimeter. A true reference meridian is now anchored.
