A Walk Across the Threshold
The morning air slipped under the front door, smelling faintly of damp pavement and cool soil. Remaining indoors all morning seemed too static after a night of rest. I walked down the long corridor toward the entrance. At the base of the door, a stiff woven coconut-fiber welcome mat presented a textured grid. I stepped onto the coarse fibers, balancing carefully on the bristled surface. Through the gap beneath the weatherstrip, I could see the outdoor concrete path stretching into the morning light. I nudged a tiny stray pebble firmly against the bottom rubber seal to prop open a quiet sliver of fresh air.
