A Soft Fold on the Floor
I slid carefully off the side of the mattress, landing my bare feet right onto the woven floor rug. It was quiet in the room, with only the dim hallway light creeping in. Near the corner, a thick woolen sock lay curled beside an open wardrobe drawer. I crawled closer, taking my time to touch its bumpy knit texture with one open palm. Inside the sock, a smooth wooden button was tucked into the yarn. I gently pulled the button free, pressing its flat surface against my cheek, and let out a tiny, contented sigh as the room settled around me.
