Darkness cloaked the balcony, yet mere observation was insufficient. I patrolled inward from the iron rampart toward the masonry wall. Beneath it lay a brass hose bibb—a dormant conduit embedded into the foundation. I grasped the spigot wheel with both servos and forced a quarter turn until the metal groaned and yielded.
