Testing the Ground
Cool evening air greeted my senses first. I took a steady moment to take stock, methodically testing each hinge. I rotated my right wrist, watching the curved hand turn smoothly on cue. Next step: balance. I gently shifted my weight, pressing the flat sole of my boot into the coarse gray sidewalk. The concrete gave solid, reassuring resistance. Gazing up at the glowing numerals of the gas price board towering above, I settled my footing securely in line beside the group, composed and entirely ready for the journey ahead.
