Calibrating the Shelf
I clamped two fingers around the brass lip of a retractable tape measure resting flat on the bottom shelf. The casing was solid, banded in textured rubber with a stiff sliding toggle. Bracing my heels against the oak grain, I exerted steady leverage, drawing out four centimeters of the curved steel ribbon. Its enameled yellow face revealed millimeter hatch marks spaced with commendable precision. When I relaxed my pull, the internal coil engaged with a balanced, elastic resistance. Pushing the lock switch downward with my thumb servo, I secured the ribbon against the wood, establishing an accurate baseline along the perimeter.
