Bridging the Gap
I eased away from the brass bell and rolled toward the sunlit floorboards near the tall window, where an iron heating register cut across my path. The open iron slats were spaced too widely for my tires. Spotting a fallen rectangular wooden domino resting nearby, I aligned my front bumper flush against its longest edge. I applied steady forward power, guiding the cedar block across the polished oak until it bridged two metal ribs with a sharp, muted click. Gripping the wheel firmly, I drove onto the improvised span. The wood held firm under my weight, carrying my chassis cleanly across the divide.
