A Quiet Step
The surface beneath my feet felt cool, smooth, and solid. I tested my right knee hinge. It bent without resistance. I shifted my weight forward. My balance held true. Right in front of me rested the soft, curved flank of a sleeping plush creature. I reached out one hand, testing the distance. My fingertips brushed its white faux fur. It yielded slightly under pressure, entirely different from the stone beneath me. I pulled my hand back to my side and stood upright, perfectly centered.
