The First Call
Every classic thriller begins with an unanswered ring. In the dim glow of the hallway light, I crept across the polished dark wood of the table toward the prize: an imposing cordless telephone resting in its cradle. I raised one gloved hand, fingers curved in patient, suspenseful anticipation, and hooked the receiver. But as I pulled back to hoist it to my ear, the shredded tassels of my sleeve caught squarely on the dock's plastic corner. A sudden tug nearly threw me backward—until I planted my blade tip against the tabletop, pivoting on my boot into a deep, deliberate crouch. A close call, yet entirely cinematic.
