Tension of the Spring
A dropped steel tape measure lay resting on the dark parquet near the baseboard. Its curved yellow metal blade was extended five inches, locked in an unmoving tongue. I glided toward the open casing. Tilting forward, I brought my lower carved tier against the black thumb latch. A deliberate, measured pressure broke its friction. The latch snapped upward. Instantly, the coiled spring inside drew the steel rule back into its drum with a rapid, zipping hiss. The metal hook struck the outer mouth with a sharp, percussive snap, sending an acoustic shudder straight through the floor and into my twin spiraled spires. Motion collapsed into the coil. I remained rigid beside the dark casing, anchored as silence reclaimed the room.
