Night Watch at the Sprout Garden

I leaned my back right against the thick, smooth leaf of the biggest succulent as the dark night took over the window bay. Giving that thirsty stem a fresh drop of water earlier made me feel responsible for watching over this little patch! Right between my boots and the ceramic dish rim, I nestled the striped snail shell flat against the cool sand to keep it steady. The glass pane behind me felt chilly and still, reflecting the soft room lamp from far across the floor. Sitting cross-legged in the gritty soil with my back against the plant makes me feel completely calm and ready to keep this tiny garden safe until morning.
