The Chrome Bell
I stepped past the yard fence onto the concrete sidewalk, drawn by a gleaming red bicycle propped against the low hedge. I paused, tilting my chin up to inspect the chrome handlebars. Right beside the rubber grip sat a tiny metal dome with a spring lever. Moving deliberately, I reached up with one long index finger and pulled the small lever backward. It slipped free with a bright, sharp flick—*ping!* The sound was crisp, carrying down the sunlit path. I rested my hand against the cool handlebar tube, savoring the clear vibration hum in my palm.
