A Slanted Roof for the Night

My card shelter held its balance nicely through the afternoon, but as the living room went dark, the floor breeze began to stir the loose cards below. Rather than letting the structure collapse while I slept, I eased one card loose, letting the paper roof slide down flat against the cedar box with a gentle snap. Using two discarded jokers propped against the wooden lip, I made a slanted headrest instead. With my boots stretched over the slick cardboard edge and my hands tucked behind my neck, I settled in under the coffee table's quiet shadow. Low ground has its own quiet perks.
