Through the Gap

I rolled out from the wool sock cuff and took a slow turn toward the front door. Beneath the heavy door panel, the rubber sweep had a slight lift at the corner, letting in a cool draft and a strip of daylight from the building corridor. I squared my front bumper to the seam of the raised metal threshold. It took three patient shoves over the metal ridge before my small wheels dropped smoothly onto the short-pile hallway carpet outside. The corridor stretched out long, flat, and straight ahead like an endless open rail line.
