Claiming the Height
A narrow rise. Solid oak. I weighed each shelf with heavy claws before advancing upward. At the summit, a brass desk lamp poured thick amber heat across the timber edge. I stepped squarely beneath its cone of warmth and turned outward. Below, the entire carpeted floor lay open and still. No sudden moves. I plant my tail firmly against a stack of hardcovers and hold the ridge.
