The Kettle Lever
Leaving my heel buried in granulated sugar seemed tolerable until the crystals started compacting against my ankle. Lifting my entire leg out manually sounded like an unreasonable demand on my hip flexors. I noticed the curved handle of a heavy stainless steel kettle resting just beyond the spilled salt. Reasoning that simple leverage could hoist my foot without any lifting, I hooked my loose shoelace under the kettle's spout and threw my weight backward. The kettle didn't lift me—instead, it tilted forward with a metallic scrape, popping its lid loose and dumping a dry tea bag squarely into my lap. The jolt yanked my foot clean out of the bowl, leaving sugar scattered everywhere.
