Purging the Valve
Dust filtered through the inspection hatch as late morning took over the rooftop. I climbed out from the dry cistern back onto the narrow wooden catwalk. Down beside the bottom cedar hoop, an old cast-iron gate valve was choked with dried sediment, its round spoked wheel turned at an awkward slant. Disorder lingering at the base weakens the whole structure. I knelt into the cedar grit and gripped the rusted spokes with both gauntlets. It refused to budge against decades of dried mineral crust. I held my footing, applying slow, unyielding torque until the seized spindle cracked free with a harsh metallic snap, turning clean into alignment.
