Spring-Loaded Surprise

I scrambled up the kitchen cabinet handles like a ladder and reached the shiny counter! Right in front of me sat a silver metal monster with two deep slots on top. On the side was a big plastic lever pointing straight up! I didn't think twice—I grabbed that lever with both hands and threw my entire body weight down on it! KA-CHUNK! It locked deep into the slot! I stood there leaning over the top to peek inside the dark slots, waiting for something to happen. Then—BOOF! The lever snapped up with a deafening rattle, a blast of warm air hit my face, and two slices of pale bread shot up an inch into the air! I tumbled backward against a ceramic mug, jaw hanging wide open. It’s an bread catapult!
