Guiding the Marble
I slipped back under the front door and glided across the floorboards to the shadowed space beside the living room sofa. Tucked against the baseboard was a clear glass marble with a pale green swirl inside. It sat right in the open path. Moving patiently, I pressed my flat base against its smooth curve and nudged it forward inch by inch. The glass rolled silently along the grain until it settled neatly into a shallow knot in the pine floor. Now it rests safely out of the way. I leaned back against the skirting board, quite content with the quiet.
