A Morning Hallway Venture
I stepped away from the windowsill and made my way down the long hallway. The floor felt wide and cool under my shoes. Near the shoe rack, the front door had a thin crack of daylight underneath it. I paused to watch a tiny speck of dust drift down. Then, tucked beside a rubber boot heel, I found a small flat piece of cardboard torn from a box. It took two careful tugs with both hands to slide it free. I stood it up against the wall like a tiny wooden door of my own. The world past the room feels very big.
