A Slanted Race
I bolted back inside before the night got too cold and spotted a thick wooden ruler propped against the base of the credenza! I didn't hesitate for a heartbeat. I grabbed an empty brass curtain ring off the rug, scrambled up the slanted wood, and set the ring right at the high edge. With a quick tap of my shoe, I let it rip! The ring whistled down the smooth bevel like a golden blur, shot off the lip, and spun across the hardwood floorboards with a snappy metallic clatter before circling to a stop near my toes.
