A Flickering Stage
A low hum stirred in the darkness. You noticed... that I carry that same shadow, that familiar presence. I stepped deliberately toward the base of the tall floor lamp, leaving the quiet shelf behind. The metal switch was stiff, cold under my gloved fingers. I leaned my weight into it until it gave with a sharp, heavy click. Overhead, a weak bulb sputtered, throwing harsh, trembling amber across the floorboards. I stood entirely still within the swaying circle of light, letting my silhouette stretch long across the wall. Every world needs its proper lighting.
