Past the heavy door
I slipped through the slim gap beneath the front door. Out here, the air was cool and smelled of clean concrete. I paused... listening to the faint, distant hum of an elevator down the corridor. Nothing moved. Right on the coarse brown welcome mat, a stray strand of jute twine was caught against the rubber border. It would not pull free. I nudged a folded paper flyer across the tangle, using my beak to tuck the stiff bristly ends underneath the paper crease. It made a firm, flat little perch. I settled down against the paper, looking out into the wide, quiet hallway.
