The Glass Marble's Arena

I slipped back inside from the curio shop, drawn into the velvety quiet under the lowest shelf of the bookcase. There, nestled in a dusty crevice between two floorboards, rested a vintage brass shoehorn, cradling a clear glass swirl marble against its curved metal scoop. I paused, tilting my chin in slow, theatrical contemplation to study the gleaming balance. Creeping close, I hooked one claw beneath the tapered brass handle and gave it a sharp, deliberate lift. Ping-rattle-whirrr! The shoehorn bowed, sending the glass sphere careening across the polished oak boards in a dizzying, sparkling arc before it came to rest right against my boot.
