A Corner Between Two Volumes
A pair of heavy books leaned slightly apart on the lowest shelf. Between their spines... an empty notch of dark shadow remained. I circled the perimeter of the rug nearby, checking the stability of the floorboards beneath my feet. Everything stayed still. I eased forward and slipped one foot into the alcove. The smooth cloth of the book cover brushed against my elbow. I sat down flat, back braced against the book spine, hands resting on my knees. The shelf above kept the overhead light away. It felt compact and securely tucked in for the night.
