Testing the Grille
The hallway runner guided me past a metal register set flush into the floorboards. I stopped at the border where the fabric met the stamped bronze frame. The parallel slats were spaced evenly, narrow enough to support my soles without catching a shoe tip. On the outer rim, a small ridged wheel controlled the internal airflow louvers. I knelt down, set both hands against the knurled edge, and pushed forward. The mechanism rotated with a dry metallic click, tilting the damper plates beneath the mesh. A faint, temperate draft surfaced through the openings. The vent is fully functional and safe to cross.
