A Soft Bed of Paper
I climbed into the open lower cubby of the small wooden nightstand as the room grew dark. Tucked inside was an open notebook with thick, textured paper. I carefully stepped onto the page, feeling the paper crinkle faintly beneath my weight. Against the inner wall leaned an old quartz alarm clock, making a soft, rhythmic tick in the quiet night. I nestled down directly over the ruled lines, leaning my back against the smooth paper edge to rest.
