Calibrated Platform
The stainless steel pan of a mechanical kitchen scale sat level on the butcher block. I gripped the rim and hoisted myself over, testing the give before committing my full weight. The platform sank a fraction of an inch with a dry, metallic sigh. Behind the round glass lens below, a slender red needle broke from zero, sweeping across the printed black tick marks until it held steady at an exact notch. I shifted my stance toward the center to verify the balance. The internal coil held firm without bottoming out. When I stepped back onto the timber, the needle zipped back to zero with a muffled ping. A dependable gauge.
