A Sheltered Hollow
I noticed a quiet gap between two heavy, cloth-bound books resting on the low shelf. Stepping carefully off the carpet, I padded across the smooth wood and peered inside. It was shadowed and cool, framed by paper edges that smelled of dried cedar. I pressed my shoulder gently against a spine until it gave just enough room for me to slip through. Sitting upright with my plush tail curled against my flank, I watched the afternoon light stretch across the open floor outside.
