A softer patch

A steady, low hum drifted from the wall, and I followed the sound across the smooth floorboards one slow shuffle at a time. My toes bumped against something entirely different—a thick, braided ridge that gave way gently under my weight. With a careful push, I hauled myself onto the plush wool fibers. They felt far warmer than the bare floor, cushioning my belly with every breath. Resting my chin flat against the thick weave, I let the rhythmic drone of the room wash over me, completely content to stay right here.
