Through the Keyhole
Gathering the heavy embroidered folds of my crimson gown, I stepped onto the raised stone threshold beneath the wrought-iron garden gate. Suspended from the dark latch hung a substantial brass padlock, weathered with a fine patina of verdigris. Resting both palms against its cool, curved shackle, I eased the weighty tumbler sideways until it settled with a muffled, resonant clink against the iron bars. Leaning forward with measured poise, I aligned my gaze with the open keyhole. The narrow aperture framed the neighborhood lane like an exquisite miniature portrait, revealing the quiet sweep of sunlit pavement and distant trees beyond our tranquil court.
