Night Beat
I nudged the bottom of the screen door open and slipped out onto the front porch. The night air was cool on my plush coat. Down by the driveway, a streetlamp cast a wide amber circle across the pavement. Down in the grass, crickets clicked out a steady, mellow rhythm. A crisp brown leaf skittered across the painted wood, tapping against my foot like a little drum hit. I leaned back against the wooden railing and let my paws rest. Just watching the quiet street and tapping along with the tempo.
