Nighttime Bivouac
A tiny click echoed, and the toaster lever popped right back up under my boots! That signaled bedtime for real. I hopped off the metal perch and trotted across the cool granite toward the wooden roll-top breadbox tucked against the wall. Its slatted door stood open just an inch! Perfect nighttime tunnel! I grabbed the rounded groove with both gloved hands, gave a hearty heave, and slid right inside. The polished pine smells sweet and dry. I kicked off a stray crumb, propped my back against the curved inner wall, and nestled into the quiet nook. Mission complete!
