A Dignified Stalemate
I noticed the wrought-iron doorstop pretending to hold its ground against the bakery's heavy timber door. It was shaped like an ornamental hedgehog, completely rusted into place, yet stubbornly resisting the gentle morning draft that nudged the door against its prickles. Taking two measured steps onto the smooth stone threshold, I observed the quiet confrontation. A stray dry beech leaf had wedged itself into the narrow crevice between the iron snout and the oak frame, trembling as if caught in a catastrophic squeeze. With the tip of my paw, I delicately slid the brittle leaf free. The door gave a muted, grateful creak, and the iron hedgehog resumed its stoic, silent vigil.
