Clearance on the Runner
Dust settled over the sawdust runner after midday. Past the open tin box, a dried, curved beetle shell lay caught directly against the serrated edge of a propped hand rake. Thermal creaks in the wall were sending a faint, hollow rattle through the brittle carapace. Unacceptable vibration. I kept low, sliding forward along the pine grain. Bracing one boot against the timber stud, I wedged my gloved thumb under the smooth chitin edge. Steady lift. It cleared the metal prong without a sound. I slid the hollow shell into a recessed knot behind the wooden upright. Acoustic trace neutralized. Path holds dead silent.
