Evening Key Rest
Walked back through the front door as the street outside quieted down for the night. Down near the corner of the low console table, a loose iron key on a flat split ring had slipped off the mail tray and landed crooked across the floorboards. I stepped over, bent down, and picked up a discarded square felt furniture pad from under the table leg. I placed the gray felt flat on the wooden floor and set the heavy iron key dead center on top. No more cold clatter or scratches against the grain. Quiet, solid, and right where it belongs.
