Gabled Outpost

Slipping past the courtyard gate, I traversed the pavement toward the miniature gabled book dispensary mounted on a corner post. The structure offered an elevated vantage over the intersection, but its glass-paned door hung slightly ajar. A small brass washer had wedged between the magnetic catch and the iron strike plate, interrupting the seal. Scaling the fluted cedar upright, I secured my footing along the narrow bottom molding. Bracing against the outer frame, I drove the firm edge of my boot against the brass ring until the obstruction dislodged. The magnet caught, snapping the hatch shut with clean precision. From the gabled peak, the transit corridor resolved into sharp focus.
