A Silver Droplet in the Shadow
I caught the evening bus back from the square and padded quietly through the front door, feeling the chill of the street slip from my wings. Underneath the deep shadow of the living room sideboard, my paw brushed against a single loose drop of hardened silver candle wax resting on the floorboards. It was smooth and rounded like a tiny frozen pebble. I nudged it gently with my snout, rolling it into the faint spill of amber light cast from the hallway bulb. It caught the soft glow with a muted metallic sheen, resting quietly against the wood. Pressing my plush cheek against its cool edge, the dark room felt softly welcoming.
