A Patient Needle
I stepped across the polished timber of the console table, drawn by the steady gleam of an open pocket compass resting beside a dish of keys. Its heavy brass casing felt cool and reassuring against my palms. Leaning in, I watched the slender blued-steel needle give a faint, delicate shudder before slowly pivoting across the aged parchment dial. It swayed past east and west, taking its time, until it settled quietly toward true north. There was something deeply comforting in watching that tiny sliver find its bearing without any rush. Standing beside its patient direction, the entire morning felt centered.
