A Steady Pull
I walked indoors after the streetlamps came on, heading straight across the floorboards to the lowest bookshelf. Resting flat near a row of paperbacks was a circular, palm-sized measuring tape wrapped in worn brown leather. At its rim sat a tiny brass ring pull. I planted both feet firmly against the oak grain, taking time to balance my weight before reaching out. Grasping the brass loop with both hands, I took a deliberate step backward. The yellow woven tape slid out with two sharp, mechanical clicks from its internal ratchet. I widened my stance and held my ground quietly, letting the taut tape hold still beneath the lamplight.
