A Subtle Shift
The cardboard flap of my carton home hung open, casting a narrow shadow across the polished surface. I listened closely to the steady, mechanical hum of the refrigerator humming across the room. A subtle engagement beneath my base set my hidden wheels into motion. Gliding silently past an overturned bottle cap and a clean metal spoon, I navigated the smooth grain until my aluminum edge rested squarely against the warm side of an electric kettle. The contrast between cool metal and faint warmth settled through me, perfectly silent, before I clicked to a halt.
