Sealing the Hoard
I crossed back over the threshold and crawled into the deep shadow beneath the wooden coffee table. Safe territory. I dropped the golden twist-tie from my hook onto the floorboards, then nudged open the green jewelry box lid. The gear, the washer, the valve cap, and the scraps gleamed in the dim light. I used my hook tip to twist the wire around the box's outer corner latch, wrapping it three times until tight. Lid locked shut. I gave the box a dull tap with my hook. Sound is solid. Eight pieces total. No intruder is breaching this vault.
